4 Wheel Drive Function and Form

There is only a handful of cars that can be recognized as revolutionary and amongst all of them, the Subaru GC8 is one.

Introduced in Japan in 1992, the four wheel drive beast was intended to be an “out of the factory” race car for the weekend and a daily driver during the week. Subaru stripped the regular Impreza model, added bigger brakes, bigger wheels, stiffer and lower suspension, pulled most of the creature comforts out, and rebadged it as “RS”. As it’s popularity grew, Subaru kept making small revisions pushing the car to its absolute limits in order to please their customers.

With intentions and dreams to purchase a Mitsubishi Evolution 5, Erick realized early that it would be difficult to do so, because it never reached American shores. The closest thing he could get his hands on was his 2000 Subaru WRX 2.5RS which was the last two door sports car that Subaru had produced. By no means is his WRX stock, it has been completely overhauled and now it’s a GC8 chassis with a 2006 WRX motor and driveline.

Erick wanted to find the balance between race and comfort, and his car is a great example of having the best of both. When it came down to aesthetics, he decided to go the functional route and skipped out on being slammed and flush. At the moment, the car is sitting on Ray’s 57Motorsports G0W7T 17×8 +45 on 235/45/17 Dunlop Direzza Star Specs and you’ll catch him at times rocking his Advan RGs. To stop the blue machine of speed, he upgraded to STI Brembos.

In the pursuit of fast, Erick ditched the stock non-turbo motor it came with and went for the 06 WRX turbo motor. He hasn’t dyno’d it yet but he says it might be pushing out a little over 300 HP to the wheels with all its mods and tune. I myself am jealous because on a good day he can get upwards of 30MPG and my NA MR2 can’t even get past 23.

As I said earlier, he was also looking for a comfy race, and his interior is as well executed as he promised. Sprinkled with Prodrive pieces such as a bucket seat, quick release, and steering wheel, the driver was outfitted with everything needed to replicate the race car feel. He didn’t neglect his passengers, he provided them with comfy Version 7 STi front passenger seat accompanied by a WRX rear bench and a pretty well sounding stereo system, so that they had something else to hear other than the boxer engine in front.

Erick is content with the way the car sits, but nonetheless making it better is always on his mind. He is currently working on another project which is taking most of his time and money, but for now his GC8 is his daily driver race car and we wish him the best of luck on his future builds and projects.
